John Newman is a New York-based artist. Newman is the recipient of many awards and residencies, including the Rome Prize, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Pollack-Krasner Foundation, the NEA, and a Senior Research Fulbright Grant to India. Newman is the former Director of Graduate Studies in Sculpture at the Yale School of Art. He currently teaches at the NY Studio School and the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
The uniqueness of the formal complexity generated by topological deformation and non-Euclidean geometries has broadened the sculptural vocabulary beyond the traditional modeling of viscous materials, beyond carving and beyond the construction of flat-sheet material. It has to do with challenging entrenched notions of what a sculpture is at all.
